Reusing – Eco Living Now

Is the ‘Mighty Fix’ subscription worth it? I say YES. Let me tell you why. I’ve been getting the Mighty Fix subscription from Mighty Nest for 11 months now. It’s fun to get a new package in the mail each month, especially one that is eco friendly and is shipped in eco friendly packaging! The cost per month is $11.79 (that includes taxes and shipping) and I receive a product that costs at or more than that amount. An annual subscription, where you pay for the whole year at once brings the cost down to $8.84/month. I was also able to get the first month free through an online promo and I can now refer friends and they can get the first month free as well. Other Fixes Mighty Nest also just introduced Fix+. If you sign up for this version of Mighty Fix, some months you will get a higher priced eco item and be charged up to $20. This helps the company to share a wider variety of products with you. I haven’t tried Fix+ yet, but I’d like to. It looks like they also have a fix called “Mighty Body” which is similar to Mighty Fix except it’s just body care products and is 12.99/month. What Do You Get In a Fix? The idea of the Fix is to help you easily transition to an eco-friendly lifestyle. Each month you get items that will help you move from disposable to reusable, sustainable products. I like that it gives me a chance to try things I might not have considered. Up until now I’ve been getting a mystery product. Usually I liked what I was sent, but sometimes I knew I wouldn’t really use it much, like the stainless steel drinking straws. It’s great that they are reusable but I just don’t really use straws at all- plastic or otherwise, so I’ll have to re-gift that to a friend! I recently realized that you can choose your next “fix” from a list of options. Here’s what I’ve received so far: Wool dryer balls (am I using them wrong because I think they make my clothes more static-y) Stasher silicone bag (handy, see my article on food storage containers) Organic washcloths (I use these a lot) Bees wrap Duralex glass storage (I like these, but still prefer Pyrex) Stainless steel drinking straws Meliora Non-toxic, concentrated all purpose cleaner tablets with a glass spray bottle Silicone spatulas A reusable e-cloth window cleaner wipe (I have yet to use, but it’s intriguing). Wooden fruit scrubber and Fresh paper (to keep produce fresher longer) All Good healing balm (I like this product) The really great thing about this subscription is you can shop for many eco-friendly products on their site and they send them with your fix box and shipping is free! I really hate paying for shipping so this is a win for me. You also become a Mighty Nest member through your Fix subscription which gets you discounts on products, up to % 30 off. You get further discounts if you sign up for select product subscriptions, like if you agree to have shampoo sent to you on a recurring basis. They sell starter packs of things like cleaning or laundry essentials. The MightyNest Standard On their site they have a lot of tips on how to get started on your eco journey. I like the website, it’s nice to look at and easy to navigate.They also have a blog with even more ideas and tips. MightyNest products are hand-picked to make sure they meet a high quality standard. They’re sourced from reputable companies and free of toxins. They are made with stable materials that won’t leach chemicals. Many of their products don’t contain any plastic or plastic packaging, but the ones that do are free of BPA and PVC and again made by manufacturers personally interviewed companies with high standards. This kind of assurance is NOT something you will find with Amazon. Amazon doesn’t vet their sellers like MightyNest or even guarantee anything about their products. I like to support smaller companies that have an eco-friendly mission and are conscientious business people. MightyNest is a private company that is still run by its founders, Kristen and Chris Conn.The company was founded in 2008 and is run out of Illinois. Everything You Need? Has this site filled all of my eco friendly home product needs? No. I still have to shop other places, but I think this is a great place to start any transition to a more sustainable lifestyle. MightyNest doesn’t sell toilet paper, paper towels, non reusable garbage bags or anything that is made to throw away, (except for feminine hygiene products). I do use eco-friendly versions of those products, but they are still disposable. So good for them, but if they don’t sell toilet paper maybe they should sell bidets! I’ve also purchased the following items from MightyNest in addition to my MightyFix subscription: reusable produce bags (these are great!) organic cotton sanitary pads shampoo bar Meliora laundry detergent (not my favorite, didn’t feel like it really did anything!) dish soap (liquid and bar, I liked the bar dish soap but you need a good sink tray with it) stainless steel sink tray Swedish dishcloths (these are ok, I prefer a regular washcloth) Toothbrushes (recycled plastic from yogurt cups!) Silk dental floss a body brush The Downsides Lately it’s been taking awhile for my order to be delivered, but hopefully they will remedy that soon. You might not like a product you receive, but that is kind of the nature of ordering online anyway. You can’t return a Fix item, but go ahead and pass it along to someone that might like it more. Final Review If you’re someone like me that is making the switch to eco friendly in the purchasing of home products, then this is a great way to go. If you’re a die-hard eco-warrior, you may already be buying elsewhere everything they offer or something like them, but with the MightyFix subscription you will get a discount on common items like detergent and dish soap that you need to buy again and again.
